Packing Suggestions

 

Here are some suggestions on what items to pack for children with autism. This list can be customized based on the child’s specific sensory preferences, routines, or favorite items. 


Comfort and Sensory Items


  • Sensory Aids
    • Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs (for loud environments)
    • Weighted blanket, lap pad, or compression vest (for calming)
    • Sunglasses or a hat (for light sensitivity)
    • Fidget toys (spinners, stress balls, chew necklaces)
    • Sensory brushes or squishy toys
  • Comfort Objects
    • Favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or pillow
    • Personal items from home (e.g., a small toy, photo, or keepsake) You could use this as a teaching opportunity and have your child pack a few items that they want to bring. Airlines will allow one free personal item per person, which can be a purse, backpack, laptop bag or tote. If your child is old enough have them carry their own backpack.
  • Clothing
    • Soft, tag-free, seamless clothing
    • Comfortable shoes and familiar socks
    • Extra clothes (for accidents or spills)


Entertainment and Activities


  • Electronics
    • Tablet/IPAD with preloaded and downloaded apps, movies, shows, games, or videos
    • Noise-free or sensory-friendly electronic headphones
    • Portable gaming device (like a Nintendo Switch) and games.
    • Portable charger
    • Electronic charging equipment
    • Durable case and screen protector 
  • Travel Activity Kit
    • Coloring books, crayons, or markers
    • Puzzle books, magnetic travel games, or sticker books
    • Small figurines, action figures, or LEGO kits
    • Cards
    • Mini travel games
  • Books and Stories
    • Favorite storybooks or picture books
    • Social stories to prepare for the trip


 Food and Drinks


  • Snacks
    • Favorite snacks (familiar and comforting options)
    • Sensory-friendly options (e.g., soft foods, crunchy foods depending on preferences)
    • Pre-packed meals if dietary restrictions apply
  • Utensils
    • Familiar utensils, straws, or cups
    • Reusable water bottle


Communication Tools


  • Visual Aids
    • Visual schedule or travel checklist
    • "First-Then" cards or picture cards
    • Need a break or need help sign
    • Social stories
  • AAC Device or Tools
    • Speech device, communication board, or PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) cards
  • Identification
    • Wearable ID bracelet or tags (with name, emergency contact, and diagnosis) and Name tags or luggage tags with identifying information 


 Safety Items


  • Tracking Device
    • GPS tracker (e.g., AngelSense, Jiobit)
  • Safety Harness or Tether (if needed)
    • For busy or crowded areas
  • Child-Proofing Gear
    • Door alarms, outlet covers, or portable locks (for hotel stays)

    • Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, lip balm
    • Sensory-friendly wipes, unscented hand sanitizer and lotion
    • Pull-ups, diapers, diaper cream or extra underwear
  • First Aid and Medications
    • Travel Medical card
    • First aid kit (band-aids, antiseptic wipes, nail clippers, nail file, thermometer)
    • Prescribed medications with clear labels and with extras in case of delays
    • Over-the-counter items (pain reliever, melatonin, allergy medicine, motion sickness remedies)
    • Vitamin supplements
  • Sanitation Supplies
    • Plastic bags (for accidents or soiled items)
    • Portable potty or travel toilet seat (if toilet training or needed)
    • Laundry bag
