Cruise Planning Tips

Before You Book

  • Choose the right cruise line (autism-friendly or Certified Autism Staff

  • Select a quiet cabin location away from elevators, pools, or clubs.

  • Ask about dining options and special diet accommodations (gluten-free, allergy-safe, etc.).

  • Contact the cruise line to add any special requests.

  •  Choose shorter, less crowded, or sensory-friendly cruise options .

Before You Sail

  • Request Autism Accommodations – Contact the cruise line’s special needs or guest services department in advance.

  •  Bring Comfort & Sensory Items – Noise-cancelling headphones, weighted blankets, fidgets, snacks, and familiar routines.

  •  Prepare with Visual Schedules – Show your child what to expect (boarding, cabins, dining, activities).

  • Consider Travel Insurance – For extra peace of mind in case you need flexibility.

On Board The Ship

  • Visit Guest Services Early – Introduce yourself and confirm accommodations (early boarding, dining times, activity access).

  •  Take Advantage of Autism-Friendly Programs – Some ships offer sensory-friendly movie times, quiet activities, and trained kids’ club staff.

  •  Find Quiet Zones – Libraries, lounges, and observation decks can provide calm breaks from crowds.

  • Stick to Routines When Possible – Meals and activities at consistent times help reduce anxiety.

  •  Plan for Emergencies – Review muster drills with your child in advance (some ships offer modified safety briefings for autism).

Shore Excursions

  •  Choose Simpler Outings – Shorter tours, beaches, or less crowded attractions are often better.

  •  Pack a Go-Bag – Include snacks, headphones, comfort items, sunscreen, and ID bracelets.

  •  Have a Back-Up Plan – Sometimes staying onboard while others explore is the best choice for a stress-free day.

General Tips

  • Inform Staff About Your Child’s Needs – Many crew members are autism-aware and happy to help.

  •  Use Technology – Download movies, games, or calming apps before sailing (Wi-Fi can be spotty).

  •  Build in Downtime – Cruises are full of stimulation; schedule quiet time daily.

  •  Celebrate Small Wins – Each new experience is progress — focus on enjoyment, not perfection.
