Hotel and Resort Tips

Matching a family with autism to the right hotel or resort is all about understanding their unique needs, preferences, and comfort level.  The key is personalization: no two families with autism are the same, so you’re not just booking a resort — you’re matching them to the right environment, staff, and services that will allow everyone to enjoy their trip. This is why I have detailed forms for clients to provide me with the information I need to recommend the best options. These are some of the factors I consider when working with clients.

  • Sensory Considerations – Does the family need quiet rooms away from elevators, pools, or entertainment areas?

  • Dietary Needs – Do they require gluten-free, allergy-safe, or special meal options?

  • Routine & Structure – Does the child need consistency (set dining times, familiar activities)?

  • Support Level – Is the family looking for on-site autism-trained staff, respite care, or sensory-friendly activities?

Look for Autism-Friendly Certifications

  • Certified Autism Centers (IBCCES) – Resorts like Beaches Negril have staff trained in autism awareness and sensory needs.

  • Autism Double-Checked Properties – Hotels that provide detailed information on what to expect and staff training.

  • On-Site Supports – Quiet zones, sensory kits, activity pacing, and flexible dining options, VIP amenities.

Location & Environment

  • Resort Size – Large resorts can be overwhelming; smaller, boutique-style properties may be calmer.

  • Proximity to Attractions – Is the family comfortable with busy theme parks, or would a quieter beach vacation be better?

  • Room Layouts – Suites with separate spaces give families flexibility and calm-down options.

Dining & Food Services

  • Special Diet Menus – Resorts that can accommodate gluten-free, dairy-free, or allergy-safe meals.

  • Buffet vs. À La Carte – Buffets can be overstimulating, so knowing if table service is available helps.

  • Advance Communication – Hotels that allow pre-arrival requests for food accommodations. Does the hotel allow food to be brought in the room.

  • Room Layouts- Does the hotel offer family rooms/suites/connecting rooms.

Activities & Entertainment

  • Sensory-Friendly Programs – Look for resorts with kids’ clubs or activities tailored for neurodiverse children.

  • Quiet Pools or Relaxation Areas – Options for downtime away from busy spaces.

  • Structured Activities – Programs with predictable routines can help children feel more secure.

Accessibility & Safety

  • Safety Measures – Secure balconies, gated pool areas, easy-to-navigate layouts.

  • Staff Training – Staff who understand autism behaviors and communication differences.

  • Emergency Preparedness – Hotels that can adapt evacuation or safety protocols for special needs.

Ongoing Communication

On going communication is important. Make sure you communicate with the hotel/resort before, during and after booking. Contact them before arrival to follow up and make sure your requests are noted. Some of the services you can expect from EZ Access2 Travel are:

  • Provide Detailed Pre-Arrival Info – Photos, maps, and sensory details help families prepare.

  • Custom Planning – Match the resort to their specific comfort level (quiet and low-key vs. high-energy and full of activities).

  • Follow Up – Check in before and during travel to make adjustments if needed.
